The Market Research Wing owes its origin to the Ad-hoc Committee constituted by the Cotton Textiles Fund Committee in 1957. The department was constituted with an aim to undertake research and prepare database including collection of data from both the sectors and the consumers of the textiles in the country. Market Research studies for linking up the demand of textiles with production through a scientific approach has not been made in the country till then, the primary objective of the constitution of the Market Research Wing was to survey the internal as well as the export markets with this aim.
The commencement of the activities pertaining to the Market Research was initiated with a collaborative agreement with the Cotton Council International of America, USA in 1959 for organizing market research studies.
Today, the Wing has rich experience in organising research and studies on textile trade and industry in the country and is manned by researchers and statisticians having expertise in research on textile consumption pattern, globalization issues, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), international trade, issues pertaining to tariff & non-tariff barriers, World Trade Organisation (WTO), and Trade facilitation etc. Headed by a Director, the Market Research Wing is operating from nine regional centres besides the Headquarters at Mumbai. The wing is utilizing the services of 360 Liaison Officers across the nook and corner of the country that are trained and well versed with the collection of primary data from the field. The primary data is processed at Mumbai by the latest technologies such as High Speed Scanner and appropriate software. The study Reports of various surveys pertaining to the textile industry are published and made available in hard copies as well as soft copies.
